Over the past year, I’ve noticed a lot of really interesting green K-Beauty brands cross my radar. Earth’s Recipe is one such brand that combines naturally sourced ingredients with elegant textures and science-backed formulations. Today, I’ll be talking about Earth’s Recipe Stemwater Cleanser; a low-pH cleanser.

Earth's Recipe Stemwater Cleanser

A Low-pH Cleanser

Earth’s Recipe Stemwater Cleanser is a gentle, low pH foaming cleanser that won’t strip the natural moisture from your skin. There are many reasons why it’s important to choose a cleanser with a low pH:

  • Your skin naturally has a slightly acidic pH of around 5. It’s the optimal pH for your skin’s barrier — a combination of lipids, skin cells, and fatty acids — to flourish and protect against environmental damage and invaders. Using a high pH cleanser, one that gives you that “squeaky-clean” feeling, can damage your skin’s lipid barrier. This can cause irritation, dryness, that “taut” feeling, and inflammation.
  • A high pH cleanser also creates an environment where acne bacteria can thrive. The bacteria responsible for most acne, p. acnes, grows best at a pH of around 6.5. When you consistently raise your skin’s pH with a high pH cleanser, you’re making it easier for p. acnes to colonize your skin.

Be Mused Korea Low pH Cleanser Review

I pretty much exclusively use low-pH cleansers now and I see a definite difference in the health of my skin. In fact, when I occasionally use a higher pH cleanser (in the process of testing new products to review), my skin instantly feels tighter, slightly irritated, and more sensitive. Some people with more resilient skin may be able to tolerate a high-pH cleanser, but why not give your skin its best shot at being plump and healthy?

Earth's Recipe Stemwater Cleanser

Earth’s Recipe Stemwater Cleanser has a pretty awesome ingredients list, featuring sweet almond oil, niacinamide, and bamboo, birch, and cypress extracts, among many other botanicals. It’s sulfate and paraben-free. The full ingredients list is available on Be Mused Korea Earth’s Recipe Stemwater Cleanser product page HERE.

Earth’s Recipe Stemwater Cleanser has a sticky gel texture, very much like honey. It’s clear in color with tiny little white bubbles in it. It doesn’t feel sticky once lathered up though! It creates a luxurious lather that feels so refreshing on the skin and really makes washing my face a pleasure. I probably massage it over my skin longer than I really need to, simply because it feels so silky and hydrating. It also rinses off easily and my skin feels super soft after using it, not tight or dried out at all.

All I ask of a cleanser is that it cleanse my skin effectively without drying it out. On both counts, the Earth’s Recipe Stemwater Cleanser performs admirably. I feel like it removes the daily grime from my face (I use an oil cleanser to remove makeup, but on days when I just wear sunscreen, the Stemwater Cleanser is all I need). In addition, I love the refreshing gel texture and how silky it feels on my skin, as well as how my face feels toned, refreshed, and softened after using it.

Earth’s Recipe Stemwater Cleanser would be great for all types of skin, but especially sensitive skin, as it is very gentle and hydrating. Is your current cleanser a low-pH cleanser?

What is your biggest aging concern?  For me, it is the skin around my eyes.  I have wrinkles, crinkles, crow’s feet, laugh lines – whatever you want to call them, I have them.  A lot of damage from the sun, not wearing UV protection, and squinting all the time has taken its toll.  I am now at the stage where I use moisturizing eye cream daily, but also looking for a serum that could tighten and de-puff the area around the eyes. how to prevent wrinkles around the eyesA. by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum was born out of the eye serum from their 3-Step Ultra Moisture Mask. It’s an upgraded formulation with additional ingredients for anti-aging and brightening,

A by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum Review

A by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum is full of botanicals.

  • Soothing, hydrating powerhouse of aloe vera provides anti-inflammatory and moisturizing benefits without making the skin feel oily or greasy.
  • Green tea is a powerful antioxidant due its high concentration of polyphenols.
  • There’s also a slew of floral/fruit extracts, and oils: witch hazel, anise, bergamot, lavender, lotus, geranium, rose etc…

And contains 4 vitamins.

  • Niacinamide (also known B3) is not only powerful antioxidant that acts as an anti-inflammatory, improves your skin elasticity, enhance the skin barrier function, but it also helps with hyper-pigmentation and even out your skin tone.
  • Panthenol (B5) is an excellent hydrating ingredient for your skin.
  • Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (also known as MAP) is a stable derivative of vitamin C and is non-irritating. It helps to stimulate collagen production, brightens and evens out skin tone, and is an anti-inflammatory.
  • Tocopherol (E) provides antioxidant and anti-aging benefits.

Anti-aging and cellular renewal peptides also make appearances in the A. by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum.

  • Palmitoyl tripeptide-5  and acetyl hexapeptide-8 firm and regenerate skin cells while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Yeast derived adenosine has anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, and anti-inflammatory properties while beta-carotene protects and repairs skin for better tone and strength.

A by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum ReviewI love the green glass bottle that A. by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum comes in!  More things need to come in dark forest green bottles like this!  The eye serum is a golden shade and has a nice viscosity to it. It looks like an oil, but doesn’t feel like one.  It reminds me of very watered down honey.  It is a bit tacky initially, but dries down to a nice smooth finish. The scent is AMAZING! It has a lovely light herbaceous scent to it. This is all naturally scented with no added artificial fragrance ingredient.A by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum ReviewI find that A. by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum adds a nice boost of moisture to my skin. However, where this serum shines for me is the firming and de-puffing effect it has on the delicate skin around my eyes. This is temporary, of course, but the firming helps smooth out my fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes, making them less noticeable and my skin next to my nose looks less puffy.a by bom ultra time return eye serum reviewThis serum works best for me when I use a hydrating watery eye essence/serum first, then the A. by BOM Ultra Time Return Eye Serum for firming the skin, and then topping it off with a creamy moisturizing eye cream.  You might think that is excessive, but why?  We layer toners, serums, ampoules, essences, lotions, creams on our face… So why not a few layers on the skin around the eyes?  anti-aging eye careThe eye area is probably your most vulnerable area and is the first area to show signs of aging for most people. If you are in your mid 20s or younger, you can probably get away with just using this eye serum on its own, but as you age and your skin turnover time slows down, adding another product or two would be beneficial. Have you tried layering products for your eye area yet?

87 pages in-flight skincareHowdy Heyyy from a super dry West Texas! In a few hours, I’ll be off to sunny Los Angeles, for a month-long staycation with the BFF, and I figured that this would be a great time to share my in-flight Korean skincare routine.

When packing for L.A., I had 5 things on my to-do list: buying vintage Levi’s, not forgetting my EpiPen, curating a skincare edit, and remembering to bring all of my chargers. I doubt you’d be surprised to learn that the only thing I forgot was my EpiPen, which is clearly a great example of adulting at age 30… No, it’s fine, #judgeme.

This trip to L.A. is vastly different for me, skin-wise. I’m recovering from hormonal acne, hyperpigmentation, and tons of texture issues. So the focal point of my skincare list was to cull essences, hydrating toners, mists, serums, and sheet masks.

For this 5-hour flight, I decided to be proactive, especially as nothing good happens to your skin when it’s 10,000+ feet in the air. And something I’ve learned from my never-ending wanderlust is that the key to that post-flight chok-chok glow is to curate a system of moisture & hydration while dilly-dallying in the wonders of light oils, ampoules, serums, and copious amounts of water.

Without further ado, I present to you My Short-Haul In-Flight Skincare Routine | AM Edition.

  • My favorite thing to do before a flight is to take a long nice shower because I’m into them and I instantly feel calmer. My mental fortitude feels stronger and clearer. My favorite body cleanser is the gentle Oneoseven Feminine Body Soap – which is super lux, and boasts tons of hanbang ingredients, and a mild rose scent that is lasting, so you can skip dousing yourself with perfume.
  • Afterwards, I mist my face, tap in some light serum and lotion, and a water-based sun cream like the Biore Watery Essence before rushing to catch my AM flight.

Now, that we’re in our seat (preferably the window!) it’s time to bump up the hydration so we can invoke the dewyness of Artemis.

I’ll take you through my in-flight routine step by step! But first, I want you to breathe in, breathe out, and give yourself an internal hug for confidence. Applying skincare in a public sphere can feel intimidating, especially with your seatmate side-eyeing you, but let no man/woman separate you from the glow!

  • Before starting, I like to do a quick refresh with a cleansing water, to prep my skin before jumping into my mini routine. Okay. Now, are you ready? If so, let’s mist for our lives!
  • When searching for a mist, I recommend one without too many nasties like alcohol, fillers, or parabens. I personally recommend a mist based in fermented ingredients and antioxidants. Two favorites of the moment include the Atoclassic Real Tonic Soothing Moist Mist (herbal ingredients, with a focus on anti-inflammation) & the Oneoseven Core Flex Essential Liquid (naturally fermented vinegar, and anti-aging properties).
  • Next up, we’re gonna pat in an essence or toner of your choice, I’m partial to the Whamisa Deep Rich toner, its perfection for 7 skins, but any hydrating toner will work or feel free to apply a first treatment essence.

  • Whatever you do, I urge you not to rush because it’s not like you’re going anywhere soon. So turn on an audible book or catch up the latest episode of Marvels Runaways, and slowly tap in that goodness.

Next up, is sheet-masking, which is supremely relaxing, but will get you the biggest side-eye.

  • You seriously can’t go wrong here, any mask would work. But, again let’s be proactive. Whether it’s pores, anti-aging, acne, or hyperpigmentation, choose a mask that targets your main skin concern. Some of my favorites include A. by BOM Ultra Cool Leaf Mask for troubled tired skin or Mastiha Shop Super Sheet Mask for focus on brightening + anti-wrinkles.
  • As the whole purpose of this in-flight routine is to boost hydration, it’s uber important to add in a serum that helps bind in all the goodies we’ve applied. I’m partial to the Fresh Essence by HYGGEE or the Huxley Oil-Essence, but honestly, any serum that boasts birch tree juice, centella asiatica, or niacinamide would be an excellent choice.
  • Depending on your skin type, you could stop at the serum step, but for everyone else, I definitely recommend further sealing in everything with a moisturizer. Earth’s Recipe Moisture Bound Cream is great choice for lasting hydration with boost in skin plumping for dehydrated skin.
  • Finally, we have UV protection. which is such an important step that so many people neglect while curating their in-flight skincare.  One of my favorites is Earth’s Recipe Waterful Sun Gel, which is a lightweight hydrating UVA/UVB protector that doesn’t leave a white cast, which is perfect for my brown skinned girls. Talk about ahmmmazzzing!!!

87 pages be mused korea in flight skincareAnnnddd that my loves is my short-haul in-flight skincare routine. No fuss and always effective. In-flight skincare should be all about hydration, so remember to mist, mask, and drink tons of water, to achieve that glow!

Star shares her passion about travel, culture, and K-Beauty at and YouTube

By Camilla Brown

For most of my adolescence and young adulthood, I saw my skin as an adversary that needed to be tamed and broken. As someone who did not have naturally good skin, I was always struggling with issues of breakouts, oiliness, or on the other hand, dryness and dehydration. I thought that the best way to deal with my problematic skin was to blast it with various chemicals in my efforts to beat it into submission.

It was only when, as an adult, a friend told me that she thought Korean beauty products were the most advanced in the world, did I discover a different way to do skincare. That is, I discovered the care part of skincare, the part that had always eluded me.

To me, K-Beauty is about caring for and nurturing your skin. About reviving it, rather than attacking it. Korean beauty products often emphasize the importance of restoring the moisture balance in the skin, and of nourishing it with antioxidants and vitamins. The emphasis on giving your skin what it needed to thrive was a completely new idea to me.

In the process of learning how to cultivate the health of my skin, there were two distinctive elements of K-Beauty that changed the way I thought about skincare.

1. The Importance of Water (Hydration)

In the immortal words of Zoolander, “Water is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty.” Never is this more true than in K-Beauty. Every step in a properly designed K-Beauty skincare routine is about retaining and restoring the essence of beauty in your skin, water. The dewiness and plumpness of moisturized, healthy skin, known as chok chok, is the most coveted quality in K-Beauty.

The aspect of K-Beauty that made the biggest difference to my skin was its emphasis on hydrating layers. Korean beauty has entire categories of hydrating products that are mostly unknown or underemphasized in Western skincare. For instance, toners in Western skincare tend to be astringent and cleansing, whereas in Korean skincare they tend to be hydrating and prepare your skin to absorb subsequent hydrating products.

First essences, essences, mists, serums, oil-essences, are all examples of products that replenish the water content of the skin. And by layering these products, I was able to restore the moisture in my skin in a way that I had never been able to do with just a cream. This is the reason you so often hear of the 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine. It’s not about doing 10 steps just for the sake of using a ridiculous number of skincare products. The reason for the 10 steps is to gently cleanse and then layer on many hydrating layers to deeply saturate and plump up the skin.

2. The Importance of Taking Time for Self-Care

I grew up with the mentality that the more multi-tasking a product was, the better. If I could get a cream that was also an SPF, that was also an anti-aging treatment, that could also pick up my dry-cleaning, great! But the multi-step Korean skincare routine flies in the face of multi-tasking, one-step products. There are few multi-tasking products in a 10-step routine. Instead, each product does one thing really, really well. No shortcuts here! Seeing improvements in my skin while using an intentional nightly routine has convinced me that patience pays off. Aside from the mere skincare benefits of a multi-step skincare routine (not necessarily 10 steps; I’m very supportive of doing whatever works for you), doing this kind of lengthy beauty routine every night also forces you to take time out to care for yourself. You can’t do a 10-step routine in three minutes (though it doesn’t have to take hours either). Whereas when I was younger, skincare was an afterthought, a night cream I slapped on seconds before falling asleep, now skincare has become a thoughtful ritual that I consistently make time for.

The psychological benefits for me have been significant. The nightly ritual helps me to feel present, and to feel that I’m deliberately valuing myself, and only myself. In a lifestyle that places demands on me daily as a woman, as a mom, as an employee, as a friend, and as a wife, it is incredibly refreshing to spend a half hour every day doing something just for myself. With K-Beauty, skincare becomes self-care.

I’m Lisa, the creator of Be Mused Korea shop, and now the editor-in-chief of  this new beauty editorial blog you are looking at! I was fortunate to work alongside wonderfully talented and supportive people throughout the launch of Be Mused Korea, and now this new beauty editorial venture – Be Mused World – begins!  With the help and support from many of you, we want to turn Be Mused World into your favorite K-Beauty Lifestyle Herald for 2018 and beyond!  Most of our content will be created by beauty experts and lifestyle bloggers around the globe, and sometimes by our staff writers right here in Seoul, and once in a blue moon, by me!

As one of my favorite mentally unstable idol once said, “Beauty has no obvious use; nor is there any clear cultural necessity for it. Yet civilization could not do without it.” (Sigmud Freud)  That, of course, can be interpreted in myriads of ways. But I love how effortlessly translates to how we feel at ease and comfort in presence of beauty. The notion of beauty and attractiveness may change over time and differ across cultures, but we can’t deny its perpetual presence. Undoubtedly, we know that beauty indeed is in the eye of the beholder. But what about the beauty of our skin? Is our standard of what is beautiful skin universal? Do we all want that wrinkle-free, pore-less, water-glow, plumped up skin? That perfect skin many Korean celebrities adorn; is that really achievable just with good skincare products and practices?  These are questions will eventually address here at Be Mused World.

Besides rounding up different points of views to metaphysical questions of beauty and skincare practices, Be Mused World will also have reviews of beauty products: Korean beauty brand overviews and skincare product reviews (not exclusive to Be Mused Korea brands and products). We will also touch up on skincare ingredients/formulations focused articles, and of course beauty and lifestyle musings from your favorite bloggers!

beautybemusedJust as Be Mused Korea shop launched in past September in beta-mode, Be Mused World is also starting out in beta-mode. We’ll add the bells and whistles as we go, and continue to improve and grow our content. The next six months is our experimental stage. Help us find our voice! Your continued support and suggestions for improvements are key elements to our growth.

By the time I’m ready to pass on this editor-in-chief baton to someone new, I hope Be Mused World has made positive impact to your beauty lifestyle.
